It’s easy to see why the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is on Car and Driver’s 2024 Editors’ Choice list. While it’s always been wonderful for towing trailers, blazing trails, and hauling family or cargo around, the line has been completely redesigned this year with modernized features, improved powertrains, and much more.
Design
The Tacoma’s appealing contemporary cabin feels extra spacious thanks to its raised ceiling. Taller occupants will enjoy the newly styled roof’s squared angles because they create extra headroom. It’s also much easier to find your most comfortable traveling position with so many steering wheel and seating adjustments. Plus, while the extended Cab models have six-foot beds, you also have an alternative five-foot bed on the Double Cab models.
Performance
The 2024 Tacoma is a genuine workhorse. It can haul a payload of up to 1,705 pounds and has a maximum towing capacity of 6,500 pounds, which is enough to handle most mid-sized trailers. Better yet, all off-road models come with the hardware you’ll need to go adventuring practically anywhere.
Part-time 4-wheel drive on demand and an 8-speed automatic transmission are standard across the entire Tacoma line. A 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine delivering 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque powers the lowest two trim levels. This powertrain allows you to easily merge and pass. While there’s no question about the 2024 Tacoma’s toughness, it’s quite well-behaved on the road. You’ll find the handling perfectly refined with accurately light steering combined with shifting that’s quick and smooth.
Technology
The technology features in the 2024 Tacoma were improved when its cabin got a significant makeover for the latest model year. The line’s base model has a standard sound system with four speakers and a 3-month free trial subscription for SiriusXM. An 8-inch multimedia touchscreen display anchors the infotainment system on this model, but it’s worth noting that the higher trims offer a standard 14-inch display that provides magnificent maps and exterior camera views.
Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility are standard throughout the lineup. So you can quickly access the content on your phone, including audio streaming, maps, and more.
Safety
If you’re driving on tough terrain, you’ll want all the protection you can get. Fortunately, Toyota has equipped all of the 2024 Tacoma models with important driver’s aid and safety features, including:
- Backup Camera with Projected Path
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
