While the Japanese auto manufacturer has a celebrated history with hybrid vehicles, the 2025 Toyota bZ4X marks their first foray into all-electric mass-market cars. This spirited and compact SUV showcases the best of Toyota’s legendary engineering prowess.

Innovative Electric Drivetrain

The powertrain on the bZ4X delivers near-instantaneous torque through the vehicle’s wheels for a thrilling and engaging ride. Toyota’s electric SUV is available as either a front-wheel drive model with a single electric motor or a dual-motor, all-wheel drive configuration. The single motor version boasts an impressive output of 201 hp and 196 lb-ft of torque, while opting for all-wheel drive boosts these numbers to a formidable 214 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque.

The front-wheel drive configuration of the base-level XLE trim of the bZ4X offers an estimated driving range of 252 miles on a single charge. EPA MPG-equivalent estimates have this bZ4X setup rated for 119 MPGe combined. Add the extra electric motor for all-wheel drive, and you still enjoy a respectable 228-mile estimated range and an EPA-estimated 104 MPGe.

Dynamic Drive Modes

Innovative driving engineering is also on show with the different drive modes on offer with the bZ4X. The rear-wheel drive model boasts an eco drive mode, a snow drive mode for unfavorable driving conditions, and regenerative braking with Boost drive mode.

Opting for the available all-wheel drive capacity brings X-MODE. While the all-wheel drive setup delivers improved traction and greater confidence on the road in all conditions, X-MODE takes this one step further. With the push of a button, the bZ4X’s all-wheel drive capability is maximized, with the vehicle adjusting power delivery and modulating the brakes. X-MODE offers different driving modes for different conditions, including:

• Deep snow/mud mode
• Snow/dirt mode

Packed With Technology

The focal point of the cabin is a 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen. From here, you can access navigation or listen to your favorite music. The interface design is intuitive and ergonomic, and Toyota’s fully-connected infotainment system boasts wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto compatibility, allowing you to seamlessly integrate your devices.

All new bZ4X models come with a trial subscription to Toyota’s Drive Connect services. This offers access to cloud navigation, which incorporates Google Points of Interest data. Also included is Intelligent Assistant, which allows seamless control of the navigation and multimedia systems through voice commands alone.

The 2025 bZ4X comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance technologies. This includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection that alerts you to potential collisions and can even automatically apply the brakes if necessary. Full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC) allows you to maintain a preset distance from the car in front, from highway speeds all the way down to a complete stop.
